Dear ABMInsider,

For normal folks, this is the December holiday season. But personally, I’m counting down the days to January…

There’s a lot to look forward to in our first issue of 2024 (our 35th year publishing Atlantic Canada’s business magazine). For starters, there’s our 4th annual Readers’ Choice Awards for Best B2B services in Atlantic Canada (recognizes companies making their mark by helping other entrepreneurs build and grow their businesses). Then there’s our Best Places to Work recognition program—it’s a great opportunity to learn how clever managers are leveraging HR to recruit and retain employees in a competitive market.

And then there’s the juicy stuff…

Like our story about competing personalities and conflicting interests in what is probably the most photographed destination in Atlantic Canada: Peggys Cove. Researched and written by award-winning journalist Stephen Kimber, this must-read feature warns about the trouble that’s brewing behind the scenes.

Staff reporter Ashley Fitzpatrick delivers a 100-year-plus retrospective about the founding, growth and expansion of Fortis. From its formation as the St. John’s Electric Company in 1885 to what is now an international powerhouse (both figuratively and corporately), Ashley asks why they stay based in N.L.—and if they plan to leave. The answer? You’ll have to wait for the January issue to find out.

We also look at the resoling of N.B.’s Hartt shoes, how a hyper-local focus on P.E.I. defines Tim Banks’ operating strategy, why some young Nova Scotians are reviving the general store and how Rigolet’s Eldred Allen is finding success as both a photographer and cultural archivist.

There’s much to celebrate about January—but here’s a little holiday gift for you in the meantime. We’re currently offering our Print + Digital subscriptions at a 25% discount. It’s our ONLY subscription discount this year and the offer ends November 30.

More big announcements coming soon. Counting down the sleeps!
