As you probably now realize, each issue of our magazine has a central theme so that we can take a deep dive into a topical subject. Our November/December issue, now live, is all about innovation. But what is innovation?
I asked that question on my social media platforms recently and, not surprisingly, a lot of answers related to technologies like robotics and artificial intelligence. Still, there were also more philosophical responses like “transformative ideas,” “synergy”, “progress” and “action”. I heard that it’s “opportunity” (and “risk”). And “necessary”. The common denominator to all those suggestions can be summarized in one more word: change.
For this innovation issue, we looked at the changing energy landscape and whether Atlantic Canada’s carbon reduction targets are realistically achievable or if the path to net zero is merely paved with good intentions.
We also examined four different home-grown transformative technologies and how they are changing the way we work and live. See “Solutions R Us” for more on gut health, organic insect repellants, indigenous workforce development and local video game development.
For cash-strapped startups working in the innovation space, we spoke to venture capitalists from across the region to see what they want (and definitely don’t want!) when they’re getting pitched for investment dollars.
One of our most inspiring and insightful articles this issue is Common Ground, by Stephen Kimber. This fascinating story touches on the complex relationships among Labrador’s indigenous communities. Though divided by politics, they are united in their pursuit of innovative developments that honour and protect the bio-diversity of the Big Land.
The headline to all of this is our cover story: Atlantic Canada’s 30 Under 30 Innovators for 2022. These remarkable young people, ranging in age from 17 to 30, are busy transforming creative ideas into commercial opportunity. Their work is exciting, covering everything from social innovation and artistic endeavours to fintech and agriculture.
Yes, innovation can be hard to define. But you know it when you see it.
